Foreboding Joy from Edogenous Series, 2010-2012rr

Will Someone please tell me exactly what is so controversial about a Method Actor/Conceptual Artist creating an artwork to promote HIV awareness? Particularly to his own community. My goodness how backwards has our society become?

So this is Christmas, huh. Another year over and a new one about to begin. "What year is it anyway?" Robert thinks to himself. The last few years have all just sorts blurred themselves together in his mind. Bouncing around from house to house and state to state. Going where the cool wond Takes him. Ya dig! In one of Roberts rare moments of clarity he remembers to take his Atripla. "I hope these work this time" he says. He sure is happy with his gay doctor who understands him and his current lifestyle enough to give him the HIV drug prophylactically. Cuz the last few nights have been so unforgettable they remain a blur. With all of these guys throwing around all of these letters, T, C, G and D and no one stopping for a moment to even ask if he's poz. Let alone put on a condom. Condoms in this world are the taboo. What a word, what a christmas. Oh well, thinks robert, here's to a happy New Year.

David S Pollack aka Chase Alias hopes to bring to light with his new Endogenous Series how backwards moving our cultural standards have become. As an Immersionist he look back in envy at the freedoms which artists used to be able to express themselves without having to worry about cultural and even legal action being taken against them.

Immersionism is a young art movement which combines Lewittian Conceptualism with Method Acting practices and principles. Stanislavsky and Strasberg Acting Methods which utilize sense memory and affective memory are an Immersionist's base. Lewittian Conceptualism adheres to the ideal that the medium is not the message, the idea becomes a machine that makes the art.

This is a role being played by Chase Alias an actor. But for way too many young gay men out in the world, lost and alone, they play this role every day. Lets keep our wits about us when we go to blow our minds.

Once photography has broken away from its original function as technique or means for documentation, it is merely a fleeting state of existence that has been transformed into one possible reality. It is this transformation that makes photography a kind of movement and gives it it's distinct significance: it is merely one type of existence. -Ai WeiWei

By turning the camera on himself, and selecting the photographic Genre of self-portraiture, David Pollack is attempting to create a canon of works consisting of probing, surprising, and thoughtful images. Although, the majority of his photographs are pictures of him, however, these photographs are most definitely not self-portraits. Rather, Pollack uses himself as a vehicle for commentary on a variety of issues of the modern world. Pollack employs acting, in particular method acting, to create characters and lifestyles in which these characters choose to exist. He employs concepts of method acting to create characters, such as Chase Alias. He lives his life completely immersed in these characters lifestyles for years before building his installations ands then finally photographing himself as these characters.

Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get the work done. If you wait around for clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you're not going to make an awful lot of work." -Chuck Close

David S Pollack becomes Chuck Close with the help of some Method Acting skills he attempts to visually and conceptually reinterpret the words and idea of this conceptual artist using this very quote of Mr Close's, Information he has studied and even traits he picked when briefly meeting Chuck as an art dealer in Chelsea before Pollack decided to abandon his Art Dealer to pursue his life's goal to become a Conceptual Artist.

Who's Hungry?

Via Flickr:
Two years ago I started a project in cultural anthropology about the way we use the body on daily basis. Being a photographer, I had decided to include photography as a means of conducting research. The photos you can see here are the result of a cooperation with wonderful people, models and interlocutors all in one. We talked about the role of the body in the everyday life: the way we take care of it, the way we dress it and how we try to show ourselves through it and also how the media can influence our outlook on our bodies. We took nude photos to try to reflect on the way we approach our nudity. The models had the chance to chose the photos they would like to show to others during the art show and here they are, for you to see.

Last Saturday, we opened the said art show. It was a great experience and I'm really glad I made this project from a to z. I feel like I've matured a little and could now take up another project, again using photography and a little bit of this social sciences' approach. It's a wonderful feeling.

Some sundays ago, Rennan and I went out to take some photos. We had some in mind, and for those we had to hit the road to find the "scenery".
On the road, we noticed some thick clouds appearing in the sky.

Rennan >> I don't believe it! We never go out to take photos, and when we do, it rains! We won't be able to take photos!
me >> oh yes, we will! I can perfectly take photos inside the car while you hop and frolic in the rain...
Rennan >> ...
me >> I'm siiiinging and it's gonna raaaaaaaaaaiin
Rennan >> ok, if you don't mind getting your car wet with my soaked clothes...
me >> the problem is that the place I have in mind is down a dirt road and if it rains, the car will bog in the mud... also, my cell phone doesn't have a signal here and... OH MY GOD OH MY GOD THE FENCE THE WHITE FENCE!!!

(swerved the car to the other side of the road all of a sudden)

Rennan >> That's why I love going out with you... always an adventure...

he sits on the fence and a few hundred shots later he asks me:

Rennan >> are we done yet?
me >> pretty much, why?
Rennan >> because my ass and the fence are one and only thing now...
me >> HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA (literally, I almost rolled on the floor)
Rennan >> like... a few shots ago (probably 50) I started to feel they were blending, now I feel I'm part of the fence...
me >> LMAO

we got in the car and Rennan starts:
Rennan >> I'm siiiiinging in the raaaaiiin... just singing in the raaaiiin
me >> ... ¬¬
Rennan >> darned music, it's stuck in my mind now...

20 minutes later
Rennan >> I'm siiiiinging in the raaain... DAMN! Anna! it's all your fault, you started singing that music!

1 hour later
Rennan >> I'm sing... DAMN!!!

When the world is enjoying the monsoon inside car shade, the good old hankerchief is the protector for this old man ...a contrasting futune of common man ... See that the old man doesn't even have a shoe in his feet ..

Well there are lots of contrast in common man's life...I would have love to get a close up of the man suffering in rain, but,I had only 18-55 kit lens with me...nonetheless,this picture surely connects to people as a picture portraying contrast in human's furtune old man suffering in 1st monsson in Bangalore.

I try to contrast; life today is full of contrast... We have to change. ~ Gianni Versace

I just have to put this of the comment I received in Orkut by Suvajit da is following :-"nice bright rainy mood ... Others suffer from shade, some enjoy in open with bare foot !! etao possible !! " I liked the new tagline :)

7Up_Visit Un City_v3 vintage 21'x10' UnCola billboard poster by Pat Dypold, 1971

Via Flickr:
21' x 10', 7Up "Visit Un City" vintage 30-sheet UnCola billboard poster.
Learn more details about this, and other giant posters in my "7Up Billboard" set (right, or link below):

Original cost: $3.50. The poster was postmarked 9/1/1972. The artist was Pat Dypold who at one time worked for the J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Company in Chicago. JWT orchestrated the UnCola ad campaign. She did most of this work after forming her own independent studio. Her signature is in the bottom right corner. She also did the well known 7Up Butterfly and Bottle artwork and the bulk of the other outdoor ads. An ad like the one I used to order it can be seen here:

Collage of (12) panels (2 high x 6 wide) totaling 9'-9" x 21'-1". Each 43" wide x 59" tall thick paper sheet was photographed panel-by-panel on a homemade vacuum table (<$30) and photoshopped together into this 3rd color collage of this design to minimize inconsistent lighting and shadows from folds. Only the 4 far right panels have ever been displayed (in my college housing when first issued). This is the very billboard that my collection evolved from. There is some yellowing from early exposure to acids present in the original cardboard box in half of panels E2 & F2 (who knew?), a few thumb tack holes & regretable masking tape reinforcement behind those corners. The other 8 panels are in mint condition. The colors are really this vivid! This was only printed in this giant "30 sheet" billboard size.

The presence of signatures was a perk to help certain artists establish name recognition. Artists, well known or not, were invited to submit designs that were then reviewed anonymously by the client. Interestingly, those submitted by Peter Max were not picked for the campaign per the art director at JWT.

If you have any UnCola billboard posters, please tell me about them. Has anyone ever seen another one of these? - - ONE OF A KIND - - To the best of my knowledge, this is the ONLY COPY of this poster in any size that has ever surfaced.
[2012: One other documented billboard has now surfaced]

Design #12 in the yellow poster offer from 1972.
