last week, i had a bad friday. i work as a research scientist in an academic research laboratory, where we are constantly testing new ideas, running experiments and analysis, and at the end, publishing our results in academic journals. that afternoon, i found out that a prominent rival research group had abused the power of the peer review system to suppress our work and promote their own, in a blatant conflict of interest. i know this stuff goes on all the time but i'd never experienced it on such a personal level, with work i was especially proud of. academic honesty is so important in every field, but especially in science. without it the whole institution crumbles.

so there's not very many days where i come home from work and "need" a drink, but this was one of them. i turned to an old standby, the classic margarita. 2 ounces of good tequila, 1 ounce fresh lime, 1/2 ounce cointreau, 2 tsp extrafine sugar, on the rocks with a salted rim. not surprisingly, this was just the trick!

this friday is shaping up to be better already! headed to mammoth for the first skiing of the season. happy weekend!
